This six (6) semester program is an advanced placement track for LPN’s desiring to become RN’s. Courses are delivered in a hybrid format. Students receive transfer credit for their LPN course work, complete a nursing orientation workshop, complete a transitions semester and then take four additional semesters of course work to earn their associate of applied science in nursing degree. The program is completed Summer Semester of the second year.
The Nursing program is an integral part of the University. Nursing faculty members believe that the best preparation for a career in nursing includes not only the study of nursing and the sciences, but a broad liberal arts education as well. This combination promotes the development of the student both as a nurse and member of society. Nursing students have an opportunity to participate in general education classes online with students majoring in other fields of study.
This program is designed to be completed in six (6) semesters on a part-time basis, some students may choose to take more time for a variety of reasons. Those students who wish to progress in school at a slower pace may do so by electing to complete some or all of the general education course requirements prior to applying for admission and being admitted into the Nursing Program. Once a student is admitted into the Nursing Program, however, all general education courses and nursing courses must be taken in sequence and be successfully completed prior to enrolling in the next semester. Continuation in the Nursing Program requires a grade of “C” or better for all required nursing courses and a “satisfactory” designation for the clinical experience in nursing courses where this is a requirement.
Clinical learning experiences are provided in healthcare settings with the elderly, adults, children, new mothers and newborn infants, at a variety of hospital, community health agencies and clinics. Advanced Placement Track LPN-RN hybrid students are required to complete 45 total weeks of clinical throughout the Nursing Program. Clinical experiences are assigned within an 80 mile radius of the University. Transportation to and from the University and clinical agency sites (or field trip locations) is the responsibility of the nursing student.
Nursing faculty supervise students while scheduled for experiences in the clinical agencies. Field trips are also scheduled to various out-of-town specialty units and hospitals. Technical nursing skills and procedures are learned and practiced in the on-campus Nursing Skills Laboratory.
A nursing faculty member is responsible for advising individuals interested in the Nursing Program and will clarify the process which is required for possible acceptance into the Program. Enrollment in University courses neither implies nor guarantees a student eventual acceptance into the Nursing Program.
Upon successful completion of the Nursing Program, the graduate is awarded the Associate of Applied Science Degree in Nursing Technology (AAS Degree). Nursing students must complete all degree requirements within five (5) years of their semester of initial enrollment.

Is your program accredited?
The University of Rio Grande Holzer School of Nursing is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) and has provisional approval by the Ohio Board of Nursing (OBN).
What type of degree will I receive?
You will receive an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Nursing (AAS) and will be eligible to sit for the NCLEX-RN (State Board licensure exam).
How long is the program?
The Advanced Placement Track Hybrid LPN-RN Nursing Program is a two-year, part-time program lasting six (6) semesters (Four (4) main semesters and two (2) ten (10) week summer terms).
Can I begin this program at any time?
This program begins once per year in the Fall Semester only (classes begin in August 2019).
Can all work be completed on line?
No, while all course work can be viewed online, exams will be proctored at various approved sites. Clinical experiences are scheduled during the last five semesters of the program. Clinical hours will be completed at locations within an 80 mile radius of the University of Rio Grande.
Is the curriculum flexible? Are there any pre-requisite courses?
- All nursing courses and clinical hours must be completed as laid out in the curriculum plan without exception. General education courses may be taken at any time prior to program completion.
- There are no prerequisite courses required for entrance as the final admission decision is based on the entrance exam score alone. What is the application process?
- Applicants must submit both the general admission and LPN-RN ONLINE (hybrid) program applications (available online under admissions) and select LPN-RN ONLINE as intended major.
- Applicants must submit official transcripts from high school and all universities/colleges attended (if applicable) to the Admissions office.
- The Admissions office will send information regarding registration for the HESI SP PN-ADN entrance exam once all information has been verified and the applicant has been accepted for general admission and has met all eligibility requirements for the School of Nursing.
What is the application time line/when are applications available?
- Applications are made available beginning each Fall semester. Applications are for the program beginning the Fall semester of the following year (for example, an application submitted in Fall 2018 is for the program beginning Fall 2019).
- Eligibility reviews take place continually, but registration for the HESI SP PN-ADN entrance exam will not be opened until the beginning of the spring semester (typically February or March).
- Once HESI SP PN-ADN entrance exam registration opens, registrations will be taken in the order they are received until all exam seats have been filled. Seating is limited. Once all seats ae filled, registration for the year will close.
What are the prerequisites/eligibility requirements?
- To be eligible applicants must have graduated from an accredited LPN program with pharmacology content incorporated.
- Applicants must be licensed as an LPN.
- Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher.
How will I know if I am eligible to test?
- Only applicants who have completed the initial general admission process will be reviewed for eligibility and notified of status. Eligible applicants will be provided with HESI SP PN-ADN entrance exam registration instructions. Notification and instructions will be sent by both e-mail and standard mail.
- Official notification of eligibility, including HESI SP PN-ADN exam registration information, will not be sent until registration opens in February/March.
What exam is used for entrance?
Registered, eligible applicants will take the HESI SP PN-ADN exam. This exam is comparable to the LPN NCLEX in content and format.
Is there a study guide for the HESI SP PN_-ADN exam?
Yes, LPN NCLEX study guides will generally provide adequate preparation for the exam. We recommend whichever guide (s) each student is most comfortable with utilizing.
How do I register for the exam?
Eligible applicants may either register /pay by phone or debit/credit card (recommended) or by returning the mailed registration form with payment to the Admissions office. Phone registration instructions will be provided in the eligibility e-mail.
How much is the exam?
The $60.00 exam fee is due at the time of registration; registration cannot be accepted without payment.
How can I pay for my exam?
Debit/credit card is the only option available for phone registration. For mailed registrations, we accept check or money order. Registrations made in person may be paid by cash, check, money order, or debit/credit card.
When /where does testing take place?
Testing takes place at the University of Rio Grande main campus, during summer, usually in the last half of June. Weekday and weekend as well as morning and afternoon testing options are typically provided.
What do I need to bring to the exam?
Applicants must bring photo ID for exam check-in. No outside calculators permitted, however students may use the computer’s calculator.
How is acceptance /denial determined?
Applicants will be ranked by their HESI SP PN-ADN Exam score. The top 80 applicants will be accepted into the program.
How will I know if I am accepted to the program?
Once all testing is complete, tested applicants will be notified of acceptance or denial by both e-mail and standard mail. Results are usually available the week after the last exam.
I was accepted into the program! Now what?
- Accepted applicants will receive an official admission offer response form by mail. This is the last communication regarding the Hybrid LPN-RN program that will be received from the Admissions office. The form must be signed, indicating acceptance or denial of the offer for program admission, and returned by the stated deadline to the University of Rio Grande-Holzer School of Nursing.
- Further instructions will be sent by the School of Nursing after the response form deadline. Once accepted all questions should be forwarded to the School of Nursing.
I did not score high enough for admission. What are my options?
The top scorers on the exam that did not score high enough for admission will be considered for admission should a space open prior to the beginning of the program. Otherwise, non-accepted applicants are encouraged to reapply and retest for the following year’s program.
