Mission
The mission of the New Student Advising Office, Testing and Career Services at the University of Rio Grande/Rio Grande Community College is to provide an open-door information center for students and alumni that provides academic advising, career services and / or testing services leading toward a successful degree completion.
The New Student Advising Office, Testing and Career Services is a multi-functional office of the University of Rio Grande/Rio Grande Community College. We offer assistance in Academic Advising, Career Services and Testing Services.
Academic Advising
Offers assistance to new incoming freshmen, students who have not yet declared a major, transfer students from other institutions, Nursing Technology Applicants (Pre-Nursing) and College Credit Plus students (CCP).
Career Services
Offers assistance in resume building, mock interviews, career choices, employment information boards, internships and annual events to assist the student in their endeavors to gain employment upon completion of their degree.
Testing Services
Offers secure testing facilities for a variety of exams for the student and for the public.

Testing Services
The University of Rio Grande/Rio Grande Community College Testing Service’s Mission is to accurately administer and provide quality services in a secure, comfortable testing environment for students, faculty and the community while maintaining NCTA Professional Standards and Guidelines. Normal testing hours are 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Please check with www.rio.edu for the university’s status during inclement weather. The New Student Advising Office, Testing and Career Services will be open if the university is open.
The administration of proctored exams by the testing center require scheduled appointments 24 hours in advance.
Testing Services offered:
Placement Exam (Math / English)
Currently, the University of Rio Grande/Rio Grande Community College uses Accuplacer for math placement and Writeplacer for English placement. Individuals who would like to review their math skills prior to testing, may visit the following site for practice: https://accuplacerpractice.collegeboard.org These tests help ensure the proper skill level at which a student is placed into his or her courses.
Placement Exams take approximately 1 1/2 hours to complete and are administered Monday – Thursdays at 9a.m., 11a.m. and 1p.m. To schedule an appointment for a Placement Exam please contact the New Student Advising Office, Testing and Career Services at 740.245.7279.

Faculty Make-Up/Proctored Exams
This make-up/proctored testing service is offered to assist both the student and instructor with regular make up exams and special accommodation testing. The administration of make-up and or proctored exams require scheduled appointments 24 hours in advance.

The American College Test (ACT) - www.act.org
This is a national test that measures academic aptitude and readiness to enter college. The National ACT results are applicable to any institution of higher education. To register and schedule for a “National ACT Test” please log in at their web site: www.act.org

Residual ACT - www.act.org
An ACT Test whereas the scores are only reported to the examines’ institution. Scores cannot be used for scholarship purposes or athletic eligibility.
A 60-day period between residual tests is mandatory. Students can register and pay for the “Residual ACT” by visiting the New Student Advising Office, Testing and Career Services in Room 115 of the James A. Rhodes Student Center.

Guidelines
- The testing center is open Monday – Friday, 8a.m. to 5p.m. (Mon-Thur during Summer)
- A valid photo I.D. is required.
- Tests must be scheduled at least 24 hours prior and completed during hours of availability.
- Allow adequate time to complete test prior to the testing centers closing hours.
- Tests may not be started at one time and completed later.
- Tests must be turned in to the testing staff at the end of the allotted test time.
- Exams and all testing materials or tools must be returned at the finish of your exam.
- Cell phones must be put on silent or turned off and placed with stored belongings.
- Personal items are to be stored in an area designated by the testing staff.
- No food or drink products are allowed in the testing rooms.
- No children are permitted in the testing center.
- Payment is accepted by check, money order or cash. (Credit/Debit cards are not accepted)

Services and Testing Policy
Upon acceptance to the University of Rio Grande and Rio Grande Community College, and prior to registering for classes, all full-time and/or degree-seeking undergraduate students without sufficient ACT sub-scores are required to take placement exams in Algebra and/or Reading.
Part-time students may be required to test depending upon their desired coursework.
Students participating in the College Credit Plus (CCP) Program are also subject to this policy.
To arrange for placement testing, or to determine if placement testing is needed, the student may call the New Student Advising Office, Testing & Career Services at 740.245.7004, or 1.800.282.7201 ext. 7004.
Should a student wish to take a placement exam at another institution and have the results sent to Rio Grande, original test results must bear the official stamp of the testing institution or the signature and phone number of the testing administrator, and must be mailed to Rio Grande in an official college envelope by the testing institution. Results may be sent to: New Student Advising Office, Testing & Career Services, Attn: Susan Haft, University of Rio Grande, PO Box 500, Rio Grande, OH 45674.
Placement results from other institutions will not be accepted via Fax

The New Student Advising Office staff is friendly and knowledgeable and looks forward to identifying ways to support, assist and encourage students throughout their time at Rio Grande.
