[Softball] RedStorm falls short of NAIA World Series

Rio Grande Sports Information
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Bailey Cantrell hit a two-out grand slam home run to cap a five-run first inning uprising and lift Milligan (Tenn.) University past the University of Rio Grande, 6-3, in the championship game of the Lawrenceville Bracket of the NAIA Softball National Championship, Wednesday afternoon, at Georgia Gwinnett College's Grizzly Softball Complex.
Milligan, which was seeded third in the four-team double-elimination bracket, improved to 32-7 with the victory and advanced to next week's NAIA World Series in Columbus, Ga. for the first time in school history.
Rio Grande, the No. 2 seed, finished its season at 47-16 with the loss. It also marked the third time under the national tournament's current format that head coach Chris Hammond's squad fell in the title game of the Opening Round bracket.
The 47 wins equaled a single-season school record set in 2017.

[Softball] Dramatic win sends Rio to bracket final

Rio Grande Sports Information
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – University of Rio Grande centerfielder Morgan Santos has made her fair share of dazzling defensive plays this season.
None, though, were bigger than the one made by the Dayton, Ohio senior on Tuesday evening.
Santos' diving grab of a two-out line drive off the bat of Georgia Gwinnett College's Camryn Currie in the bottom of the seventh inning preserved a 6-5 win over the Grizzlies in the loser's bracket final of the Lawrenceville Bracket in the NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round at the Grizzly Softball Complex.
Rio Grande, which earlier in the day posted a 9-1 mercy rule-shortened victory over Georgetown (Ky.) College in another elimination contest, improved to 47-15 with the victory and equaled the single-season school record for wins.
The RedStorm, the No. 2 seed in the four-team, double-elimination bracket, will face third-seeded Milligan University in Wednesday's championship first final at noon.
A second final, if needed, would take place at 2:30 p.m.

Rio Grande Sports Information
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Following his team's game against Milligan (Tenn.) University on Monday in the Lawrenceville Bracket of the NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round, University of Rio Grande head coach Chris Hammond said he felt like a football coach whose team was locked into one three-and-out after another.
    And rightfully so.
Hammond's RedStorm managed just three hits and struggled to mount any serious offensive threat in a 4-0 loss to the Buffaloes at Georgia Gwinnett College's Grizzly Softball Complex.
Rio Grande, the No. 2 seed in the four-team bracket, slipped to 45-15 with the loss and will face fourth-seeded Georgetown (Ky.) College in an elimination game on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
